Had you known a pandemic could change your life, what would you have done differently?

The last time I feared God this much was when my youngest brother was diagnosed with leukaemia. I was afraid something worse could happen to him. The worst is always death.

For many, COVID leading to death is the ultimate nightmare. Any illness that has the possibility to take a life is the worst. Perhaps, it is during times like these that one is forced to think of how untimely life’s instances are and how in fact, life itself is so unpredictable. I, for one, believe that circumstances are what ultimately changes people. Sometimes, it seems simpleminded to think that people can merely be defined as good or bad, smart or dumb when in reality it’s not really how people act that shows so much of who they are but how they behave in various circumstances that allows one to better understand them.

Today, I believe that moving from New Zealand to New Jersey two years ago was the dumbest decision. New Zealand has successfully combatted COVID. I could have been safer there. I could have been experiencing lockdown near a beach somewhere. I could have been going out by now. Taking strolls on the beach. Taking in the fresh air. I’m trying to accept that some things are just meant to be.
