Why are we afraid to die?

For many, death is a scary thing to think about. The word itself carries so much negative connotation that you don’t really imagine to think of it in a different light. Lately, I’ve been wondering what is it about death that makes human so vulnerable and afraid? I believe the unknown is scary. Not knowing what happens after you die — to yourself and your loved ones is truly a scary thing. Yet when I think about it deeper, I realize that because death is inescapable then why fear it? Maybe I am fearful of leaving what I have behind. Perhaps, all of this around me seems so beautiful and the desire for it to be everlasting makes me afraid that once I die, this too will disappear.

As a Muslim, my faith teaches me that life on this Earth is a trial and true life, the one that is everlasting begins after death. When I understood this concept better, it led me to shift my perspective on everything. If you know you’re being tested, naturally you want to perform well. And to perform well, one prepares. That’s what I’m trying to do. So that if nothing else, at least I’m confident that I tried. And so, that end results won’t be too daunting.

I think when you understand death to not be this vicious phenomenon it allows you to better prepare for it. And how exactly does one prepare for death? I think it’s by leaving behind a legacy. By doing good — to yourself and others. You don’t…
